Multilayer optimization when combined with centralized SDN control can be a “game changing†paradigm. It has the promise to deliver innovative services that generate new revenue streams, dynamic restoration for higher service availability, and ultra-efficient networking whereby adding new traffic does not always mean adding new network resources. However, there is work to be done to fully deliver on this promise. For example, in the real world of separate vendors for the packet and optical layers, further details of the optical layer data model need to be exposed to obtain full multilayer benefits. The presentation reviews what true multilayer networking has the potential to be, and some of the additional steps we need to take as an industry to get there.
