The authors, together with colleagues and students, have for eight years performed research on the technology and deployment of networks of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (multi-UAV systems), in particular for the support of emergency response operations. Our experience from the research projects, our surveys of related work, and our considerations for future research have uncovered some research challenges. In the presentation, we will survey the networking and data communication research topics, present the results achieved, and point out some of the current and future research challenges that need to be addressed by the networking community. Thereby, we aim to offer a perspective on networking research that is different from the main thrust of the TNC’17 conference, yet relevant for the upcoming area of networked aerial vehicles and the wide spectrum of existing and envisioned applications of multi-UAV systems.
