Abstract—This paper describes the results of an investigation into the feasibility of using the existing GÉANT network infrastructure to distribute quantum keys. We report on the results of lab experiments and simulations aimed at developing a solution for transmitting quantum traffic over the same fiber as GÉANT data. We will set out an experimental roadmap towards a field trial and discuss how the next generation of technology will help solve the challenge of implementing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) on long-haul GÉANT fiber routes.
