Container overlay networks: supporting remote data processing

In our research, we attempt to build a proof-of-concept remote data-set processing scenario and evaluate the overlay network in this context. We see containerization as the appropriate and ideal solution to the problem of analyzing multiple remote data-sets. Containerization enables enhanced application portability across different execution environments, supporting the same container technology. The challenge on the networking part is finding an efficient and scalable way to interconnect the containers, which would enable the creation of feature-rich and extensible overlay networks. We have identified several networking-related areas which require development to be able to extend on the remote data processing problem; this work will be included in our TNC17 presentation. In specific, we plan to evaluate EVPN and ILA with the focus on multitenancy, performance and deployment complexity.
