02 - 5G Networks: How will NRENs Evolve?

Kurt Baumann

Challenges to the next generation 5G communication networks and services are exponentially faster data rates, significantly lower network latency, massively increased mobile data volumes, and extended battery life for remote cellular devices. To bring this new generation to the mainstream it requires R&D collaborations and business models based on shared resources. Therefore in 5G the smart network convergence aims to integrate networking, computing and storage resources into one programmable and unified infrastructure. The advances in 5G open new possibilities, where the new educational model becomes learner-centric, skill-centric, on-demand and personalized. Thus the GEANT/NRENs network is a very good candidate for 5G use cases investigation and first wave implementation. In order to analyze the real expectations of the R&E community and identify the most popular use cases that can be used for initial design and implementation, a 5G survey was conducted targeting researchers, the NRENs operators, and their users. The survey was comprised of 5 sections gathering information about the respondent and his affiliation in order to identify the potentially interested 5G community; the NREN & Campus typical network traffic characteristics and standards in place; the 5G related expectations of the future such as type of traffic content, experience, connecting everything everywhere, tech (economic) drivers and use cases; NREN evolution towards 5G probing on the impact of 5G on academic networks, NRENs adherence to 5G, running 5G enabled services, fixed and mobile convergence, and constrains to make the change to 5G; and how GEANT project can be leveraged to address the 5G issues.
