Demonstration: Monitoring massive-bandwidth SDN and legacy networks from the cloud

Network operators have a stringent need for understanding their networks, so they can safeguard their security and performance – and, often, record metadata to enable forensic analysis or for legal compliance. However, deploying network visibility tools is cumbersome and expensive. We present Talaia, a system born out of the collaboration of UPC researchers at UPC-BarcelonaTech and the Catalan RREN CSUC. Talaia combines extensive research in network analytics, big data and machine learning techniques in a cloud-centric, flow-based architecture that simplifies deployment while offering deep visibility.
The tool has benefited from years of production-grade deployment at CSUC and also at RedIRIS, the Spanish NREN, and is now in the hands of a spin-off called Talaia Networks.
This demo will focus on novel developments for the system for SDN. We will showcase the prototype of a SDN-centric network management tool that not only offers visibility, but also can act on the network by blocking attacks – from the cloud, and capable of handling even the largest-scale academic networks.
